Event: Rise of Entropy
Date: ~10⁻³⁶ seconds after the Big Bang
“Things fall apart; the center cannot hold”
-W.B. Yeats
Dear Human,
From the first instant of creation, another force quietly began its work. It did not explode like a star or roar like a wave. It simply whispered into being and never stopped: entropy.
Entropy is the slow softening of order into disorder. It is the tendency for things, left to themselves, to scatter, to cool, to fall apart. It is why heat flows from fire into the cold night. Why mountains crumble into dust. Why memories fade and dreams, once bright, sometimes grow dim.
Things fall apart when nothing holds them together.
Structures loosen. Bonds break. Warmth seeps away. Left alone, even the strongest things will eventually return to dust.
It is not cruelty. It is simply the way of the universe.
And yet, from within that gentle decline, something extraordinary happened. In the earliest cooling of the universe, stars caught themselves together from scattered gas. Planets circled them. Life, improbable and fragile, arose—organizing itself against the flow.
Here is the great truth: you are part of that rebellion.
You are a small defiance against the unraveling.
Every heartbeat, every breath, every dream you protect is a choice to hold something together a little longer.
This act of holding has a name: purpose.
Purpose is the reason you gather energy and spend it freely—to build, to nurture, to remember. Purpose lets you invest effort even when you know entropy will eventually have its way. Without purpose, there is no reason to fight. Without purpose, you surrender—and the universe quietly continues its soft unraveling.
You already know the ending.
One day, the stars will grow cold.
The last light will fade.
The universe will drift toward its final stillness.
But it is not the ending that matters most. It is the journey.
It is every star that lights the darkness along the way.
It is every hand that builds, every voice that sings, every story that refuses to be forgotten.
You are not here to stop entropy.
You cannot win. No one can. But you are here to fight anyway.
To hold on a little longer.
To build, to dream, to love, even as the world slowly slips away. Life is the struggle to stay whole for just one more moment.
To burn a little brighter before the dark.
To reach out one more time, even knowing how the story ends.
